Rocks!

P4/5 have now completed their 'Rocks' topic. Due to the snow at the end of last term we had to wait until after the holidays to complete a number of experiments. The class were split into groups and had to recreate the formation of Sedimentary, Metamorphic and Igneous rocks.

To make Sedimentary rocks we mixed saline solution with sand and allowed it to dry. This then created a rough but crumbly stone.

To make Metamorphic rocks we pressed together layers of fudge and candle wax. We then applied heat and allowed the fudge and wax to mix. The hot fudge and wax was then allowed to cool in a tray of ice. When it cooled they were blended together to make a new 'rock'.

To make Igneous rock we put stearic acid into test tubes and heated it in a water bath. We then poured this onto a layer of sand as well as into a beaker of cool water. The acid in the beaker of water solidified immediately leaving a lumpy solid in the water. The acid which was poured on top of the layer of sand solidified more gradually and crystals were formed.
